Jack Lynch Memorial Classic - 2006

The 2006 Jack Lynch Memorial Golf Classic proved as popular as ever with a large entry over the eight days of competition. Well over 1,000 golfers competed for the various competitions, which included mens, ladies, seniors and juvenile tournaments.

The week began with Colin Glavin and former Cork hurling stalwart Dermot MacCurtain winning the Petre Neumann sponsored fourball competition. A terrific 47 points only narrowly edged out father and son combination Dan and Finbarr McCarthy. The Juvenile competition saw Donal Daly win the overall prize. Juvenile Officer John Lynch can be well pleased with his efforts this week and indeed for all his work with the Juvenile section this year.

Monday was the turn of the Seniors where the local contingent of Stan Rispin, Harry Jones & Tim Seymour edged out Finbarr Buckley, Donal Lehane & Bob Whooley on the back nine. Great credit is due to Dan McCarthy and his committee for their work in attracting large numbers to this competition and also to Wolfe & Company for their kind sponsorship.

Teeing off at the 16th

The Peter & Diney Costeloe sponsored mixed scotch foursomes was won by Margaret Foley and Sean Connolly. Michael Kehily hit form with a great 43 points in Thursdays Leonard Donnelly sponsored singles whilst Friday was the turn of Helen Murphy, Nancy Quinn and nexts years captain Majella Minihane who won the Ladies Team Event. The ladies winning score of 57 points was the record score of the week. Lady captain Mary Dineen and her committee staged a wonderfully successful tournament and great appreciation was given to Murray Brothers Tarmacadam for their very generous sponsorship of this event.

The mens team event was won with a perfect score of fifty four points by Michael McCarthy. Dan McCarthy and Michael Kingston who held off the challenge of Geoff Wycherly, James DeCourcey and Kieran Murphy who finished a shot further back with 53 points. Third place went to Brian Fitzsimons, Hugh Fitzsimons and David O'Donovan with a creditable 51 in tough scoring conditions on the Saturday.

There was a large crowd in attendance at the gala presentation on Sunday night, which was marked by a special presentation to John Field in celebration of twenty one years of the Jack Lynch Classic. There was special thanks to the many club members who helped out with roster duty throughout the week and of course there was a special thank you to our many sponsors whose support of the Jack Lynch Memorial Golf Classic plays an integral part in its success. The organising committee of Dave O'Connor, Liam Quirke, John McNamara, Richard Roycroft and Dave Ring can be very satisfied with another successful Jack Lynch Memorial Golf Classic week.
