The Jack Lynch Memorial Golf Classic

Jack Lynch Memorial Classic - 2007

Jack Lynch Classic A Huge Success

The 2007 Jack Lynch Memorial Golf Classic proved as popular as ever with a large entry over the eight days of competition. Well over 1,000 golfers competed for the various competitions, which included mens, ladies, seniors and juvenile tournaments.

The week began with Colin Glavin and former Cork hurling stalwart Dermot McCurtain winning the Petre Neumann sponsored fourball competition with an incredible 48 points. They were comfortable winners over father and son combination of John and Kieran Lynch who recorded 43 points, nudging Frank McCarthy and John O'Driscoll into third on the count back. Another father and son combination of Liam and David Quirke impressed with 42 points in fourth place.

The Juvenile competition saw a host of great scores in the low 60's with Kevin McCarthy winning by the narrowest of margins from Dan MacEoin on 60 nett. The prodigious Kieran Lynch captured the best gross with a level par 71. Kieran was to feature once more in the team event (in fifth place with Gene Hourihane and Fintan O'Connell) and it seems the world is at the feet of this 13 year old 4 handicap golfer. Already this summer Kieran has captured the U-13 boys titles in Munster, Leinster and Connaught and will be aiming for the "Grand Slam" in Ulster in early August. How appropriate in a week of heroics from both Padraig Harrington and Rory McIlroy at The Open that this burgeoning talent should shine so brightly — perhaps he can emulate his countrymen's triumphs in the years to come. Juvenile Officer John Lynch can be well pleased with his efforts as can Dan McCarthy and Brian Fitzsimons who ably assisted on the day.

The Seniors took centre stage Tuesday where Macroom's Ben Philpot, Ed O'Sullivan and John O'Brien claimed first spot on 50 points followed by an East Cork team of Michael McGrath, Donal Kelleher and Donal O'Callaghan on 49 points. Great credit is due to Robert Salter-Townshend and his committee for their work in attracting large numbers to this competition and also to Wolfe & Company for their kind sponsorship.

The ever popular Peter & Diney Costeloe sponsored mixed scotch foursomes was won by Martin and Catherine Moloney with a nett 30. This was good enough to see off the challenge of Frank and Bernie Ryan on 31.5 with Tom Foley and Majella Minihane further adrift in third place on 31.75. This event has grown in stature over the years and the unprecedented entry of 168 speaks volumes for its popularity.

Donie McCarthy hit form with a great 46 points in Thursday's Leonard Donnelly sponsored mens singles whilst Friday was the turn of Helen Murphy, Nancy Quinn the Lady Captain Majella Minihane who won the Ladies Team Event. Not only was the winning score of 57 points the record score of the week, but it also saw the successful defence of the title for this dynamic trio. Lady Captain Majella Minihane and her committee staged a wonderfully successful tournament and great appreciation was given to Murray Brothers Tarmacadam for their very generous sponsorship of this event.

The mens team event was won with a nail-biting 50 points by Jim Aherne, Killian Hurley and Owen Lyons of Dunmore. There was a plethora of 49's with many a tale of woe and misfortune by those gathered on that mark. Runners up went to the sponsor's team of HLB Nathan where Trevor Lacey spearheaded the challenge on the elusive 50 points. Locals Tommy Ryan, Paudie O'Donovan & John Lynch, also on 49 points, finished in third spot.

There was a large crowd in attendance at the gala presentation on Sunday night, which was marked by glowing tributes to the presentation of the course and in particular to the "Augusta like" greens. The bar and catering staff received warm praise for satisfying the hoards of hungry and thirsty golfers throughout the week and there was a special thanks to the many club members who helped out with roster duty throughout the week. In particular, a special thankyou was reserved for the many sponsors, whose support of the Jack Lynch Memorial Golf Classic is central to its success. Overall, Captains David O'Connor and Majella Minihane can be well pleased with a hugely successful week.
