Juveniles Advance in Fred Daly Trophy
Following their maiden triumph over Glengarriff in the previous round, our
Fred Daly team faced the stern test of Killarney Golf Club in Skibbereen
last Saturday. The quality of golf in this encounter was of a very high
standard and once more the imperious Kieran Lynch paved the way for a
Skibbereen victory with a win in the opening match secured on the 15th.
Unfortunately Gary Connolly came up short in his match, but any Skibbereen
nerves were quickly allayed with the impressive golf of David Quirke who
romped home in a very comfortable 7 and 6. Next up was the youngest member
of the side, 14 year old Kevin Davis who despite going down 2 holes early
on displayed tremendous fighting qualities to eventually win out 3 and 2.
The ultra competitive Daniel Daly was happy with his days work and added
another point for Skibbereen with a 4 and 2 win. Incredibly, Ryan Price has
needed only 24 holes in his last 2 matches to dispatch his opponents and
with this latest success Skibbereen had secured the 4 points needed for
victory. Dan McKeown was well in control of his match out on the course
when his game was called in. Macroom are our next opponents in a tie to be
played in the neutral venue of Bantry on the 11th May.

Lady President's Prize — Mrs Catherine Field — 2nd Sept 2007
Lady President Catherine Field enjoyed warm tributes and praise from her fellow officers and members at the presentation of her prizes last Sunday evening.
Captains' David O'Connor and Majella Minihane remarked how Catherine had embraced her Presidency with her customary flair and style and paid tribute to her marvellous contribution to the club in her year of Presidency. There was a tremendous entry in both the ladies and mens competitions and it was Bronwyn Murphy who recorded her first major triumph with a superb 39 points playing off 17. There was a raft of players on 38 points hot on her heels with the best of these 38's, Catherine Werner, in second place followed by Helen Quirke in third, Breda Browne in fourth and Doreen Moloney in fifth. Maura Dwyer made a welcome return to form in capturing best gross with 28 points whilst Margaret Linane prevailed in the best past President section with 36. Marie Connolly and Mary B Hennessy won the front and back nine respectively with Marion Pattenden winning the nearest the pin and Nancy Quinn taking the "concealed hole" prize (birdie on the 17th).
In the mens competition Conor Galvin emerged victorious with 40 points narrowly holding off the challenge of Joseph Joe O'Sullivan in second place on 39. Jerome O'Driscoll (now leading the "Golfer of the Year") finished third on the same score with Derry Browne one point further adrift in fourth with Pat White taking fifth spot. Padraig Burke won the best gross with 28 points with Donie McCarthy and Christopher Spiegel taking the best nine prizes. Charlie Poillot captured the best 19+ honours with 21 points.
In her address to the large crowd in attendance at the presentation, Catherine commented on the wonderful condition of our course and complimented both the course staff and the bar and catering staff for a super job over the weekend and throughout the year. The competition committee of Helen Murphy, Nancy Quinn and Marion Pattenden were singled out for their trojan work throughout whilst a special thank you was reserved for her fellow committee members and in particular the Lady Captain Majella Minihane. A terrific entry, worthy prize winners and a sumptuous buffet to complement an excellent presentation night in the company of family and friends — a fitting tribute to an elegant and hard working Lady President.
Captains Prize — David O'Connor — 26th August 2007
Tributes were paid to club captain David O'Connor at the presentation of his prizes last Sunday evening. President Brian Fitzsimons spoke warmly and eloquently about the Captain's contribution to the club in his year of Captaincy and also remarked on the commitment and enthusiasm he has displayed down through the years whilst serving on various committees.
With the course bathed in sunshine and presented immaculately, there was a magnificent entry in both the mens and ladies sections and in the end in was the form golfers Tony Walsh and Bernie Ryan who stormed to victory in the second last major of the year. Tony's golf has been flawless in recent weeks and following his incredible 46 points only a week previously, he maintained his fine form to record a 66 nett and see off the challenge of Padraig Burke who finished second with 67. A large group of players finished on 68 and after the count back it was Finbar Walsh who emerged in third spot with Derry Browne in fourth and Killian Crowley in fifth. Best Past Captain's prize went to John McNamara with 70 while Joseph Joe O'Sullivan claimed the best gross honours with a 76 gross. Sean Kenneally won the front nine prize with John Collins taking the back nine with a stunning 28 nett. Best 19+ handicap honours went to Pierce Hickey with 68.
In the ladies section Bernie Ryan registered her first major victory and not even a ten on the fourth hole could derail her march to victory. Her dazzling 62 nett was no fewer than nine shots better than second placed June Ring with Hannah ní Cinneide in third also on 71. Rachel O'Keeffe was a couple of shots further back in fourth with Marion Pattenden securing fifth spot with 74. Best Gross went to Sorcha O'Connor with 82 with Kay O'Sullivan taking the front 9 honours and Una Murray capturing the back nine prize. Best 30-36 handicap was won by Anna McCarthy.
In the juvenile section the talented David Quirke retained the Captain's prize he won last year with a spectacular 47 points playing off 16. Second was Gary Connolly with an equally impressive 43 points playing of 13 with Jack Nolan further adrift in third place with 40 points.
A very pleasant evening was had by all at the club and David can be well pleased with his efforts this past week and indeed throughout the year.
Patron's Prize — Dr. Bernard McNicholas — 11th August 2007
The Patron's prize holds a special place in the golfing calendar at Skibbereen and West Carbery Golf Club, and the large entry over the weekend competitions is testament to the high regard and appreciation our members have for our patron, Dr. Bernard McNicholas, and his wife Pauline. In his address to the large attendance at the prize giving ceremony, Dr. McNicholas spoke warmly and affectionately about his association with our club and how deeply honoured he is to be Patron of Skibbereen and West Carbery Golf Club. Captains David O'Connor and Majella Minihane expressed their gratitude to Bernard for his patronage throughout the year and remarked on the stunning array of prizes presented to both the mens and ladies sections.
In the mens, Donald McCarthy was elated with his major win which he secured with a tremendous 40 points. His victory came with the slimmest of margins from Chris Spiegel who also recorded 40 points but was nudged into second place on the count back. John Collins made a welcome return to the winners' enclosure with 39 points which was good enough for third place while Joseph Joe O'Sullivan showed his metal in capturing the Best Gross with 37 points. Tim Collins and Henry Ross featured in the best nine sections with Liam Ennis winning the best 19+ prize with 37 points.
In the ladies section Breda Hamilton's 35 points was good enough to secure the top spot from Betty Chapple who finished on the same score but had to be content with second place having been beaten on the back nine. Best Gross went to Sorcha O'Connor with 24 points while Ann Price came in third with 34 points — it proved to be a great weekend for the Price household as Ryan emerged victorious in the juvenile section. June Ring won the best 30-36 handicap with 32 points with Mary Dineen and Nuala Lupton winning the front and back nine prizes respectively. Lady Captain Majella Minihane had the hot shot of the day winning the Nearest the Pin on the 14th.
Kieran Lynch (now playing off 3 handicap) narrowly failed in his bid to retain the Dr. Bernard McNicholas Perpetual Trophy to the juveniles. The clubs rising star shot 67 nett but the resolute Ryan Price was not to be denied his maiden victory and held on to win on the back nine having also recorded a 67 nett. Andrew Mackey impressed in third place with 69. In the non handicap section Jerry O'Riordan finished ahead of other prize-winners Noel McCarthy and Alan McCarthy.
At the presentation ceremony members were treated to a sumptuous buffet and refreshments and a most enjoyable evening was had by all.
President's Prize — Mr. Brian Fitzsimons — 20th May 2007
President Brian Fitzsimons enjoyed warm tributes and praise from his fellow officers and members at the presentation of his prizes last Sunday evening. Captains David O'Connor and Majella Minihane remarked how hard working and dedicated he is and congratulated Brian on an excellent weekend of competition. Despite the unsettled and blustery conditions, particularly on Friday, there was a large entry in both the mens and ladies competitions.
In the mens section, Dermot O'Flaherty recorded a superb 66 net to hold off the challenge of both Fergal Morgan in second and Pat Dwyer in third with 67 net. Frank McCarthy came in fourth with 69 net while Noel Kearney captured the Best 19+ handicap prize with 70. Captain David O'Connor won the Best Gross with 77.
The battle in the ladies section became one of endurance with high winds and squally showers sweeping the course which made scoring extremely difficult. Teresa O'Sullivan emerged triumphant capturing her first major with a very creditable 77 net with Breda Hamilton beaten on the count back in second place. One shot further adrift came Mary Dineen and Margaret Foley. Best Gross went to Sorcha O'Connor.
In his address to the large crowd in attendance at the presentation, Brian commented on the wonderful condition of our course and complimented both the course staff and the bar and catering staff for a super job over the weekend and throughout the year. Brian summed up his year as one of his most enjoyable years in his 10 years a member of the club and added how honoured and privileged he is to be President of our club. An excellent entry, worthy prize winners and an excellent presentation night — a fitting tribute to a dedicated and hard working President.
Captains Prize 2006
Tributes were paid to the hardworking captain Mr. Liam Quirke for his trojan work during the year at the presentation of his prizes last Sunday evening.
There was a magnificent entry in both the mens and ladies sections and in the end in was the form golfers Paudie O'Donovan and Majella Minihane who stormed to victory in the second last major of the year. Paudie's golf can almost be described as "tigeresque" given he has now won 4 of the past 5 competitions entered and indeed was only denied the "slam" on the count back for the patrons prize last week. It is only a matter of time that he will deservedly add the Golfer of the Year title to his collection. A superb 2 over par 73 gross (62 nett) was 2 better than Derry Browne who recorded a 64 nett. Indeed scoring was exceptional at the weekend with John Sheehan and Mick O'Shea recording a pair of 65s while Jerome O'Driscoll had to be content with fifth place despite shooting 66. Best Captain's prize went to Brendan Kingston with 68 with Maurice Leahy taking the best gross honours with a one over 72 gross and Jim Linane winning the best seniors prize.
In the ladies section incoming ladies Captain Majella Minihane continued her good form and not even a lost ball on the 12 could not derail her march to victory. Her 65 nett was 3 better than Carmel O'Driscoll whose 68 nett squeezed Mary Doyle into third place followed by Marian Pattenden in fourth with 70 and fifth place Helen Murphy with 71. Best Gross went to Sorcha O'Connor with 78 while Lady Captain Mary Dineen took the front 9 honours with Hannah ni Cinneide capturing the back nine prize.
In the juvenile section Liam had the pleasure of presenting his juveniles prize to his son David who romped to an 8 point victory in this section with a fantastic 48 points. It rounded off a very pleasant evening at the club and Liam can be well pleased with his efforts this past week and indeed throughout the year.
Presidents Prize 2006
President John McNamara enjoyed warm tributes and praise from his fellow officers and members at the presentation of his prizes last Sunday evening, 30th July. Captains Liam Quirke and Mary Dineen remarked how hard working and popular he is and congratulated John on his very successful Presidency. Despite the unsettled and blustery conditions there was a record entry in both the mens and ladies competitions.
In the mens section, Tony Walsh recorded a superb 63 net to hold off the challenge of Tommy Ryan with 66 net. Both Tony and Tommy have represented the club with distinction over the past couple of years and it was fitting that they were there at the business end of the competition battling for the first major of the year. Michael McCarthy, fresh from his Jack Lynch triumph, came in third with 68 net followed by Maurice Leahy with 69. Dave O'Connor won the Best Gross section with 73 while Pat Kirwan marked a welcome return to competitive golf by winning the Past Presidents prize with 69.
In the ladies section Bernie O'Regan was the runaway winner with a fantastic 45 points beating the form golfer Majella Minihane into second place who recorded a very creditable 42 points. Betty Chapple was two further points behind in third place while the Best Gross went to Sorcha O'Connor. In his address to the large crowd in attendance at the presentation, John commented on the wonderful condition of our course and also complimented the bar and catering staff for a super job over the weekend. John summed up his year as one of his most enjoyable years in over 30 years a member of the club and added how honoured and privileged he is to be President of our club. A record competition entry, record scoring and an excellent presentation night - testament to a popular President indeed.
Congratulations to Kieran Lynch
