Jimmy Bruen Shield

The Jimmy Bruen Shield is foursomes medal-play, with clubs represented by five teams of four, the minimum individual handicap being 6 and the minimum combined 17.

The Jimmy Bruen Shield was inaugurated in 1798 commemorates the late Jimmy Bruen of Muskerry Golf Club who inspired the British & Irish Team to their first win in the Walker Cup at St. Andrews in 1938. Jimmy was only 18-years old at the time and a schoolboy at the Presentation Brothers.

He won the British Amateur Championship in 1946 and many other National Championships, before an injury brought a premature end to his illustrious amateur carrier. Jimmy was renowned for his distance off the tee before technology was even dreamt about. A visit to his home club Muskerry will leave the visitor in no doubt about the achievements of this great man.

Round 1 Skibbereen v. Frankfield – Sat 12th May 2012
Skibbereen lost 3/2 to Frankfield in the Jimmy Bruen Shield at Blarney Golf Club. Alan Byrne and Steve Rayner won 2/1 and Michael Hurley and Donald McCarthy won 5/4 to give Skibb a early lead after Donnacha Crowley and John McNamara had lost the first match. A tense finish was set up when John O’Driscoll, Darren O’Brien levelled their match on the 17th and Paudie Nolan and David Ring birdied the 16th to be only one down with two to play. Unfortunately both Skibb pairs lost on the 18th hole to hand Frankfield the narrowest of wins.
