The golfing season is in full swing right now and many inter club competitions have taken place. Ongoing is the Junior West Cork Shield which was played in Skibbereen last Saturday against our neighbours, Macroom. Skibbereen emerged victorious in the first round with a 4-1 win and were unlucky not to have taken all 5 matches. The return leg will most likely be within the next 2 weeks in Macroom.

The first rounds of the singles matchplay are due to be completed by next Saturday, so if you haven't played yet, get your skates on and finalise the game. On Tuesday next (the 3rd of July), the mixed scramble takes place once again for the summer and consists of 9 holes golf plus a barbecue. If you have any visitors on holiday or indeed if you as a member feel like a fun evening or a no pressure competition, then do come along and support this great evening starting at 6.30pm.

Just a bit of forward planning now. The ever popular and enjoyable Jack Lynch Memorial Golf Week begins on Sun 15 July and this year will be even better and bigger than in previous years. So now is the time to ask your favourite golfer to partner you for the various competitions during the week. Don't say you haven't been warned!!

President Brian Fitzsimons enjoyed warm tributes and praise from his fellow officers and members at the presentation of his prizes last Sunday evening. Captains David O'Connor and Majella Minihane remarked how hard-working and dedicated he is and congratulated Brian on an excellent weekend of competition.

Despite the unsettled and blustery conditions, particularly on Friday, there was a large entry in both the mens and ladies competitions.

In the mens section, Dermot O'Flaherty recorded a superb 66 net to hold off the challenge of both Fergal Morgan in second and Pat Dwyer in third with 67 net. Frank McCarthy came in fourth with 69 net while Noel Kearney captured the Best 19+ handicap prize with 70. Captain David O'Connor won the Best Gross with 77.

The battle in the ladies section became one of endurance with high winds and squally showers sweeping the course which made scoring extremely difficult. Teresa O'Sullivan emerged triumphant capturing her first major with a very creditable 77 net with Breda Hamilton beaten on the count back in second place. One shot further adrift came Mary Dineen and Margaret Foley. Best Gross went to Sorcha O'Connor.

In his address to the large crowd in attendance at the presentation, Brian commented on the wonderful condition of our course and complimented both the course staff and the bar and catering staff for a super job over the weekend and throughout the year. Brian summed up his year as one of his most enjoyable years in his 10 years a member of the club and added how honoured and privileged he is to be President of our club. An excellent entry, worthy prize winners and an excellent presentation night — a fitting tribute to a dedicated and hard working President.

Three weeks ago our club saw a wonderful score being posted by none other than Dermot O'Flaherty, playing off 9 handicap. He posted a score of 52 points but what was remarkable was that his gross score was 7 under par; truly impressive in winter conditions. Whilst the official club course record continues to be held by Christy O'Donovan, nevertheless Dermot's score deserves a well-earned mention.
